Trust your instincts

If something doesn’t seem right, reach out. You are not alone. Help can come to you.

Is it normal for breastfeeding to hurt?

When babies are latched on wrong, it can hurt or feel like a pinch each time your baby sucks. Over time, this can lead to painful, sore, cracked nipples. If you have pain during breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or lactation consultant to make sure your baby is properly latched or that something else isn’t going on.

How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

During your visit, your lactation consultant will discuss your feeding history along with a visual feeding assessment. An infant weight check with pre and post feeding weights can also be done to help gain a better understanding of how much milk transfer is occurring at breast.

Am I doing this right?

There is no one right way to do things! Your lactation consultant is here to support you, provide reassurance if needed, and may be able to make small adjustments to make things more comfortable while breastfeeding or pumping breast milk.

Will this ever be easier?

In short: yes. But that doesn’t mean that today it isn’t challenging for you, and I am here to validate those feelings also. I often tell moms to set small goals and take things one day at a time. I am here to help you through the process, so please reach out if you are struggling with breastfeeding in any way, including pain latching, nipple pain, sleeping or crying baby at breast, pumping, cluster feeding, engorgement, mastitis or any other challenge you are facing.
